Ready Player 1 .... and 2, 3, and 4
Code
The first thing you'll notice when you launch the game is that the setting menu is gone.. because Unity already offers one before you launch the game. And we now have a menu for game rules. It's WIP still, but this will allow you to change up of some the settings of the game such as player health or base movement speed.
Next up, when you start the game, you'll get a menu where players can pick the color of their tank. But more importantly: player 3 and 4 can now join in on the fun!
When the game start, you might notice that something's up with the camera... It's .. alive! Well, not really, but it sure is moving around to focus on the action. It needs some ironing out of its smoothness when zooming, but overall it's doing its job just fine.
Like we said we would last week, we've added more pickups to play with, joining Mud and Dash, we now also have a homing bullet, a shield, an airstrike, and... a banana!
Lastly is something that doesn't add any gameplay mechanics, but it makes the level feel more lively... is destructible props! Some crates and barrels can be destroyed as collateral damage... poor props.
Art
First off, the HUD from last week's blogpost is almost completely in the game! It's still using the old clock, and some icons for pickups are still missing, but it's getting there, and it's looking pretty sweet.
We've also got a much needed particle effect for our bullets, which really makes your shots feel a lot better. And we have a particle for our mud so that it's a lot easier to see.
As shown in last week's blogpost, the lever now has some decoration. And to go with our vegetation and rocks, we've added a shader for the water to make it make alive and wavy, like ocean water should be.
Sound
We've also added some basic sound effects to give the player more feedback and give it that extra fun factor:
- Bleep effects for the game start.
- Banana power-up sound.
- Death sound.
- Shooting & Hitting sounds.
- Homing missile power-up sound.
- Power-up pickup sound.
